About David Lebatard

David Lebatard (lebo

Born David LeBatard in 1972 in New York City. Raised in South Florida. Graduated from Florida International University in 1995, with a BFA degree. Resided as a lecturer on the practical and technical approaches of Cartoon Art from 1992-1995 at the International Museum of Cartoon Art, Boca Raton, FL.

After his first exhibition at Johnson and Wales University in North Miami in 1996, LEBO began selling his vibrantly colored, soulfully infused paintings. During these formative years, he developed a distinct vernacular; signified by his use of opaque, bold colors, stylized black lines, musical metaphors and characters reminiscent of his Cuban-American upbringing.

Also in 1996, the artist displayed his talents as a public storyteller, as he was commissioned by The Shops of Mayfair in Coconut Grove, FL to create a series of outdoor murals. It was here that he exhibited his repertoire of cartoon images presented against flat fields of color. The strong form of his graffiti-esque designs soon began to attract widespread attention. The Miami Herald took notice and featured the artist in the Living and Arts section. In 1998, LEBO was tapped by Swerdlow Development to create exterior murals for the Las Olas Riverfront complex in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. From 1996-1999, he continued to display canvases in solo and group exhibitions throughout Florida.

The spring of 1999 saw him hired by the infamous South Beach nightclub Liquid to paint murals. Later that year, he was commissioned by Burdines / Federated Department Stores Inc. to execute interior murals and canvases at their soon to be opened Aventura location. The images were a decor highlight, and Burdines proceeded to utilize the artist for subsequent store openings and renovations throughout Florida. The creative synergy between LEBO and Burdines continues to grow, as the artists' role has expanded to creating specialty graphics and perhaps even licensing in the near future.

.

This year he has traveled to the Amazon and Mexico City through a grant from the Miami Light Project and the Ford Foundation and will be headed to New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Jamaica and Venice, Italy to take part in various design and site specific projects.
